The Department of Computer Science consists of the Department Chair, 1 Vice-Chair, 1 Graduate Group in Computer Science Chair, 36 Faculty (5 of which are emeritus), 125 non-senate academic employees of varying titles (Adjunct Professors, Professional Researchers, Project Scientists, Postdoctoral Scholars, Graduate Student Researchers, Teaching Assistants, Readers, Lecturers, and Associate-Instructors), ~20 Visiting Scholars, and 16 administrative and technical staff. The Department has 450 Undergraduate Students enrolled in two majors within two different Colleges, one of which has a national ABET accreditation. The department houses one graduate program with a total of 200 students who can obtain a MS and/or PhD degree. The current budget for organized research is $23M (with an expenditure rate of $12M) and the current budget for instruction and research is $4M. The Department occupies nearly 25,000 square feet of departmentally assigned space, as well as space used by department faculty but assigned by other units. Faculty offices/laboratories are spread out over four buildings, which include 14 research laboratories and our own undergraduate instructional facility (3 laboratories with approximately 66 machines including a server allowing a large remote access base). Several faculty have joint appointments with Applied Science, Genome Center, and Technocultural Studies. Faculty service includes Associate Vice Chancellor, Office of Research; and Associate Director of the Genome Center for Bioinformatics).

Responsibilities: This position serves as a one of two grant managers under the direction of the Business Office Manager. This position shares responsibility for the management of the department’s extramural and intramural accounts (split by faculty) including; gift management, purchasing, accounts payables, personnel, payroll, benefits, visa, and other duties as assigned within the business office. This position also works closely with administrative staff in the Genome Center to serve faculty and students that are shared between the units.

Requirements: Ability to perform budget analysis sufficient to learn the principles and practices to provide financial sound budget projections by integrating knowledge of previous expenditures and plans for future spending as indicated by faculty member or MSO. Experience with general accounting, personnel/payroll issues, key control, purchasing, and benefits policies, procedures and processes. Skill in performing effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload. Ability to set priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities. Ability and skills to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction. Demonstrated attentiveness to detail and skill to follow up on unresolved issues. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, to communicate and interact with co-workers and ’clients’ in a clear, courteous, and professional manner. Demonstrated tact and diplomacy to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in written communications to a wide range of individuals on the telephone, in person, and via e-mail, and to elicit information needed to clarify inquiries, compose and deliver messages accurately. Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with a diverse group (faculty, staff, students, outside agencies, campus departments, etc.); ability to exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Ability to maintain confidentiality on personnel and financial matters. Ability and willingness to learn new skills as needed; flexibility to expand position responsibilities as required; ability to work in a complex, diverse environment with rapid growth and changing priorities.
